Hij heeft zijn netten in de schemer uitgespreid
en van het fijnste draad een fuik geweven.
Hij gaat de lijnen langs. Zijn jachtgebied is uitgebreid.
Met raadsels zijn de paden die hij gaat omgeven.
Het wordt zijn eerste jacht. Kleur heeft deze jonge god
en kalme jager, noch scherpe geur die hem verraadt.
Hij zoekt het lijfelijke van een oude roem. Hij is per slot
nog ruw van vorm, niet meer dan een halffabrikaat.
Maar reeds is hij de drijver en de fuik. Nog even
en hij komt zijn eigen wezen achterop met wijd
open armen – Voor de machten in hem bijeengedreven
kiest hij de oude naam om hun onuitroeibaarheid.

In haar is het verzonken, verkruimeld eerst,
verdwenen in éen slaap, de hoogte van de daken,
vluchtgegevens, herinneringen aan sprongen,
de hoeken en de gaten, een hele straat.
Zij trekt een cirkel om het nieuwe en krijgt geschonken
huis en haard als prooi, een levensvorm op maat.
Herinneringen blijven met haar geen hele nachten op.
Keurig zijn de katoenen schimmen van haar bed.
Buiten bouwt zich de nieuwe wereld op.
Ons houdt het wakker. Ons wacht het verzet.

De maand der waarheid, schampert éen die wij
als geen zo vlijtig hebben leren haten.
Die de vragen heeft verduisterde de ramen
en Gorters woorden tot een stippellijn.
We laten stof in gaten dalen. Citaten,
wil hij, een hard geluid voor stamelen.
En op ons daalt de vrees van stro te zijn,
begaafd maar brandbaar, nu het zingen staakt.

Dat hij daar in de verte stond, zijn armen had gespreid,
bevreesd voor wakken als voor diepe dromen,
dat kou van water de mond soms snoert
alsof er geen vervolg op zijn verhaal mag komen
– dat zo het eerste vaag besef van afstand kwam,
dat de Merwede ook een plein kon zijn
waarop wij toch niet nader konden komen,
dat ik hem niet groter, niet kleiner heb gezien
dan bezwerend op zijn roestige schaatsen,
het maakt dat ik al zwierend over brede rivieren
met elk wak ook hem ontwijk sindsdien.
