I. Stad aan zee
We zien haar niet maar ze is hier wel.
Trek je voeten alvast wat hoger op:
ik hoor het klotsen om de tafelpoten,
ruik de vage geur van rottend wier.
En nu al weten wij precies waartoe
zij ons zal dwingen wanneer dit warme
huis ons eindelijk weer buitenlaat.
Tegen de wind in zullen we gejaagd
door straten ijlen tot ze zich plotseling
en ongeremd languit vertoont.
En zuchten zullen we en prevelen
alle lieve woordjes die ze uit ons knijpt:
zo jong en betoverend mooi in dat
onaardse licht, hoe fel weer haar golven,
hoe onbereikbaar de rust van haar einder.
En geen mens die weet hoe zij dit doet.
Alles belooft zij. Maar nooit toont ze
ons meer dan deze hooghartig
spiegelende buitenkant.

II. Bekering
Het naderde op de kade in Perkpolder
zwol aan op de overzet naar Kruiningen
spatte van de golven op de Westerschelde
klom ten hemel halverwege de Zeelandbrug
klingelde en klaterde in de steegjes van
Veere, gonsde en bruiste op een terrasje
in Zierikzee, zegende ons op de toren van
Goedereede, bekeerde ons nabij Zoutelande,
doopte ons ter hoogte van Oranjezon.
Meesterlijk was het hoe wij willoos, zonder
enig wederwoord werden ingelijfd. Zelfs door
een god konden we hieruit niet worden gered.

III. Zeehond
Er zijn zo van die dagen. De zee loodgrijs,
haar oude nukkige zelf, weigert met ons te
praten. Geen rechtuit brullende branding,
geen rustig gefluister. Een koppig, alle kanten
opgaand tegenspartelen. We komen er niet in.
Maar geheel onverwacht verschijnt ons een
boodschapper. Op tien meter van het strand
duikt zijn besnorde gelaat uit het verborgene
op. Kijkt ons ernstig aan, toont zijn glanzende
buik, wuift kort met zijn hand. Dit is het teken
dat nog niet alles verloren is.
