Rijp op het gras, de sloot gesteven, kraakt.
Herinnering beslaat soms meer tijd dan er was.
Februari, ik ben tien. Pas als ik groot ben oud.
Vertrouwd de polders zover ik ze kan zien.
Al wat ik voel staat om me heen.
Ik kijk en trek de lijnen daar om heen
van wat ooit tekening zal zijn:
winter, velden, hier de sloot.
Dat kind ben ik. Wat was ik klein
en nu ik er naar omzie, groot.

Betrapt. Het boek dat ik niet mocht
ligt op de tafel: Bob en Daphne
uit de schuilplaats waar mijn vader zocht.
Waar ik de sleutel vond. In welke boekenkast.
Wanneer, hoe lang – Ik hou mijn mond
omdat mij zwijgen beter past.
En dan ineens zijn zachte hand. Een stem
die ik niet ken.
Is deze wel van hem?
Verbaasd aanvaard ik mijn geschenk.
Het boek, een glimlach en de wens
dat ik net als mijn vader ben
en veel zal lezen. Als ik ga
draag ik zoveel ontroering rond
dat bij de tafel waar ik stond
tweemaal een vreemde vader staat.
